When starting up a new business, should I form a company, partnership or simply be self-employed as an individual?
Each option has its merits and in some cases the option you take will depend on the industry you are in and your own personal circumstances. Generally, my view is that if your intention is to be in business for the long term then setting up a company will provide you with the best outcome.
Would I be able to do my own book-keeping?
Absolutely. This will depend a lot on your grasp of book-keeping and general accounting. If you have the willingness to learn it is not too difficult to understand the concepts of basic book-keeping. This will enable you to keep your annual accounting cost down.
Am I covered for ACC when I start up my own business?
If you are self-employed, you are automatically covered by ACC’s CoverPlus policy. Your personal circumstances as well as the industry you operate in are key considerations to be mindful of when registering with ACC.
Do I need to be GST registered?
You must register for GST if you carry out a taxable activity and your turnover was $60,000 or more in the last 12 months (or will be $60,000 or more in the next 12 months) or if GST is included in your prices. There are advantages to being GST registered.
How do I distinguish between personal expenditure and legitimate business expenses?
This comes down to the actual nature of the expenditure. Quite often business owners don’t allocate personal expenditure items to their business when they are legitimate business expenses.
